Sarah Benjamin is a teacher who believes that strong relationships are the foundation of meaningful learning. She builds classroom communities centered on trust, respect, and joy, where students are empowered to see themselves as readers, writers, and thinkers. Sarah’s teaching emphasizes project-based learning, student voice, and social justice. She guides students through units that connect literature to real-world themes while fostering creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Sarah's students leave her class with not only stronger academic skills but also a deeper sense of empathy and agency. A native of Rhode Island and the daughter of two teachers, Sarah grew up surrounded by poetry and developed a love for both literature and teaching. She studied Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing at UC Santa Cruz and later earned her master’s degree in Creative Writing/Poetry at Saint Mary’s College of California. Before joining Berkwood Hedge School, she taught at a public charter school, worked as a preschool teacher, and coached gymnastics. Beyond the classroom, Sarah spends lots of time outside— playing tennis, going for walks, or reading in the local parks.
