World Languages
Starting in kindergarten, students learn Latin through a multimodal approach that integrates speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as drawing, movement, acting, collaborative storytelling, and mindfulness.
Learning Latin as a spoken language is supported by language acquisition research, and varied modes of instruction make the language classroom inclusive and accessible for all students. The Latin program supports Berkwood Hedge School’s literacy program. Students deepen their understanding of the English language through exploration of Latin and Greek roots. Knowledge of Latin develops students’ grammar, spelling, and vocabulary, improving their skills across academic disciplines.
The Latin program includes foundational vocabulary and basic grammar concepts. Students learn essential phrases, greetings, and everyday vocabulary, alongside an introduction to Latin’s influence on modern languages. The curriculum explores various aspects of ancient Greco-Roman culture, including mythology, daily life, archaeology, and influence on the modern world. Students gain an appreciation for the contributions of these cultures, in addition to thinking critically about their historical legacy.
